Feather Installation
For this installation Yamasaki checked and received nuances about the density of sounds: how sounds go around and flow in the space, and how muffed, crisp, or clear the sounds are. She attached numerous paper feathers covering the space to amplify or loosen up the sonorous features she caught, and those feathers function to resonate, reflect, or absorb the sounds. She vocalized and then attached feathers again and again, while communicating with the space to let it sing in a new way. This is how Yamasaki formed the installation.

 

羽根のインスタレーション

紙製の羽根を数十万枚、壁面に貼り付け、空間の響きを変化させる作品。最初に作者(山崎)は、何もない展示空間で声を発し、声の反射を耳・声帯・皮膚で感得することによって響きの状態をチェックする。特徴の強い箇所に数十万枚の紙製の羽根を貼付し、響きを共鳴・反射・吸収させる。全ての空間が材質・構造・容積によって固有の響きを持っており、作者はそれを「歌」だと考えている。その歌を引き出すために羽根を貼る。また、聴覚世界は各人のこれまでの生活や環境、耳の形状などの組み合わせで千差万別である。空間の「歌」に耳を傾けることは、自分自身に出会うことでもある。

Sound Installation _Field Recordings

The world is made of sound and light. However, most of us are sight-obsessed and mainly listen to the sounds made by what we see. When we remove one by one the auditory habits tied to sight and gives ourselves over to a variety of sounds, we get the sensation that our body expand along with the sounds. When our physical senses change, the way we see the world also changes. You are a reflection of the world, and the world is a reflection of you. In recent years, Yamasaki has conducted sound walks and discussions with a variety of people, including the visually impaired and the hearing impaired, to research how different individuals hear sound according to their own experiences and circumstances. She has begun to apply her findings to editing, using special playback methods to depict simple field recordings as rich chaos.
